LA County
Financial Coaching Program

Program Overview

FORWARD is partnering with the County of Los Angeles through its Department of Consumer and Business Affairs’ (DCBA) Center for Financial Empowerment (CFE) to administer services of the “Financial Coaching Partnerships” project. FORWARD will disburse and report on a minimum of $360,000 in grants to selected Community Based Organizations (CBOs)/non-profits. $12,000 for each staff member who participates in the County-sponsored financial coaching training program and becomes a certified financial coach.

The goal for this Project is to strengthen non-profit service providers to deliver consistent, high-quality, and effective financial coaching to historically underserved and hard-to-reach communities disproportionately impacted by the economic fallout from the pandemic. The County aims to establish a concrete network of financial ambassadors that will provide financial coaching and debt avoidance services to County residents, with a focus on serving historically underserved and hard-to-reach populations, such as, but not limited to, Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPoC) residing in areas disproportionately impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic (Target Communities). Project implementation will increase accessibility to financial coaching services to Target Communities and empower them to take action to move towards economic recovery.

The application for this program will be available from June 21, 2023 until July 7, 2023 at 5:00pm PST.

APPLICATION PORTAL IS CURRENTLY CLOSED, as of July 7, 2023 at 5:00pm PST.

Applicants will be notified by July 14, 2023 if they have been selected to participate in the LA Financial Coaching Program.

Frequently Asked Questions

FORWARD has extensive experience administering assistance programs across the nation. Our portal is easy to use and your information is secure.

The program is intended for staff from local community-based organizations who, in their day-to-day work, provide direct services to LA County residents to support their financial health.  Space is limited so it is important that the organization leaders can learn more about the program and determine who on their staff would benefit from attending.

For all questions related to your participation in the program and scheduling conflicts that may
arise that impact your continued progress in the program, please contact FORWARD at
FORWARD-support@forwardplatform.com.

Staff members must have supervisors attested approval to be approved to attend the program.
You will be required to provide your supervisor’s name and contact information for attestation
and verification that all eligible applicants are associated with an approved non-profit
organization.

Applicants must work with an approved non-profit organization that provides services for the
targeted communities.

As much as we would love to have participants from other counties, this is an LA County only
initiative.  It is intended to support local service providers in LA County.

The application for this program will be available from June 21, 2023 until July 7, 2023 at 5:00pm PST.

If you wish to withdraw your application for the Financial Coaching Program, there are no restrictions to that decision, other than you will no longer receive a certificate.

Along with the live training sessions, there are also mandatory assignments that need to be completed.

Payment will be issued during Phase 2 of the training program.

The funds will NOT be issued to the applicant. The funds will be issued directly to the CBO.

All courses will be delivered using Canvas and Zoom. Canvas is the Learning Management
System (LMS) where you can find all your assignments, training dates, due dates as well as
message your Mentor Coach. Once you have been registered and onboarded into the courses,
you will receive invitations to view the courses within Canvas. You will receive a separate
invitation for each course, so you will need to accept each invitation. Each live training session
will be conducted using Zoom. The Zoom links will be in the live training calendar events along
with any other info needed.

You will need a computer with a microphone and preferably a webcam for unhindered coaching
practice. If a webcam is not available, a microphone or headphones with built-in microphone is required at the very least. You will need stable Internet so that your conversations are not interrupted, as well as being in an environment that is conducive to full participation. For the advanced FFC® course, please know it is very interactive where you will be speaking and practicing, not just listening to lectures.

All other important information specific to each course can be found in the orientation modules
and course guides within Canvas once you accept your invitation and have logged in. Canvas
also has a very well documented help section for how to use the platform on the bottom left of
your dashboard. Your class will be assigned a Mentor Coach to guide you through the process
of the MME course at the scheduled mentor coaching sessions. Advanced FFC® course will also be assigned a Mentor Coach with scheduled coaching sessions.

There is no cost to you or your organization for your participation.  DCBA, funded by the
American Rescue Plan (ARP), is sponsoring all participants.  However, we will ask for impact
data in the future.

After you submit your application, the Center for Financial Empowerment (CFE) will assess the
applicants for their participation in the training. FORWARD will notify you via email if you are
confirmed to participate in the Financial Coaching Certification Training program.

For all questions related to your participation in the program and scheduling conflicts that may
arise that impact your continued progress in the program, please contact FORWARD at
FORWARD-support@forwardplatform.com.
